상황 : 수영 잠깐 못하게 된 잭슨에게 지지한다고 말하는 Mr.그로프

A : The school is right behind you, Jackson. … However, your parents and I feel it would be in your best interest to be paired with an academic tutor for the rest of term.

• Be right behind sb :  to completely support someone in their ideas or in what they are trying to achieve
• In one’s best interest : In the interest or for the benefit of one.
  ex. It's really in your best interest to have your lawyer review the contract before you sign it.
  ex. This decision is in your best interest, so don't act so ungrateful!

 

2.

상황 : 수업 시간 중에 화장실 가도 되냐고 오티스가 묻자 선생님이 ‘거의 다 끝나가는데 좀 참지 그래’하는 뉘앙스로 얘기함.

A : Can’t it wait, Milburn? It’s almost the end of the day.

• It’s end of the day : 그 날의 끝이라고 직역하는 게 아니라 그게 뭐가 되었든 끝나간다

 

3.

상황 : 오티스가 성상담소를 운영하고 있었다는 사실을 엄마한테 들킨 후 대화하려고 한다. 엄마가 ‘그래 말해봐. 들을게’의 뉘앙스로 말함.

A : Show me your skills. I’m all ears.

• I’m all ears : 들을 준비가 되어 있어

 

4.

상황 : 아담이 아빠한테 가게에서 그만 일하고 복학하고 싶다고 말하자, 아빠는 일단 아직 가게에서 잘리진 않았잖아 지켜보자 라고 말하는 상황.

A : I don’t want to work in that shop forever

B : Well, you haven’t been fired yet. Wonders never cease.

A : Mm-hmm

B : Let’s see, shall we?

• Wonders never cease : 놀라운 일에 기쁠 때. humorous. —used to say that one is happy and surprised by something good that has happened

 

5.

상황 : 퀴즈 쇼에 나갔는데 지고 있자 Viv가 야 우린 이길거야 하면서 리더역할을 한다. 거기에 스티브가 감명받자 pull together 진정해 마음 단단히 먹어의 뉘앙스로 viv가 말함.

A : We came here to win. And if we’re not gonna win, at least we’re gonna fight. …

B : Sorry, you kind of turned into Braveheart there. I love that film.

A : Pull yourself together, Steve.

• Pull together : If you are upset or depressed and someone tells you to pull yourself together, they are telling you to control your feelings and behave calmly again.
  ex. Pull yourself together, you stupid woman!
